THE REASON BEHIND ONE RECESS
by Moses D.
Devonshire School started the school year with two recesses for all grades, but one was taken away in mid October. This reporter went to meet with Dr. Randy Needlman to discover the reason behind why we have only one recess now.
Dr. Needlman said, “The reason that we have one recess is that we were finding that it was difficult to accomplish what we needed to in terms of teaching and learning during the school day. It was one of the hardest choices I have had to make as the principal at Devonshire. I know the other principals felt the same way.” He added, “We made the decision in September when we realized the challenges against us. I love recess, just like the kids and the teachers. Like I said, it was a tough one.”
Dr. Needlman felt badly when people didn't like the choice he made. “I felt badly because getting outside everyday is good for you kids. I am glad lunch recess continues in the same way.”
