THE CASE OF THE MISSING LOCKERS
by Alyssa L. and Marija P.
In the 4th and 5th grade hall at Devonshire School, there is a shortage of the newly installed lockers, due to there being not enough space. Even though there are 55 lockers for each grade, there are still kids that have to share, because there are 69 fourth graders and 65 fifth graders. There are even a couple of empty lockers!
“It’s hard to get all my stuff in on time,” said fifth grader Diana S. "Students have so many things that they need to put away, like boots, jackets, and snow pants."
Dr. Needlman said, “I am comfortable with kids sharing lockers as long as they can do so responsibly.” It’s hard getting everything in the locker when it’s winter, and sometimes even in spring. When students share lockers, they end up having to put snow pants on top of the locker, and their boots outside of it, too. There’s just not enough space.
A fourth grader’s father said that if he had to share a locker, he “would prefer to share a locker with a close friend.”
Fifth grader Anna K. said, “Sometimes my locker won’t close.” In the spring, it gets easier, but it’s still hard for students to cram their bags into these lockers.
A fifth grader’s mother said, “It’s a shame that there aren’t enough lockers, especially in winter, when you need to put away your gym shoes, your winter boots, and your snow pants.” She also believes that “kids should have a secure place to keep their personal belongings” and remarks that the school should “fill the empty places in the hallway with lockers.”
Locker partners who don't like each other can have a hard time dealing with each other. Last year, there were complaints about the closets that used to be in the classrooms because items were being stolen, sometimes by classmates. Although that issue has abated this year, there are still, unfortunately, a few problems with sharing lockers.
