“I think I have the best job in the world!” first grade teacher Mrs. Lila Ardell says in her blog. “Teaching first grade at Devonshire for over 25 years has been a highlight of my life.” But this is Mrs. Ardell’s last year of teaching. She is retiring to spend more time with her two grandsons. “I’ve been working for 34 years and need a break,” she said. Everyone gets to a point when they need a break, and Mrs. Ardell has reached that point!
After Mrs. Ardell graduated college from Northern Illinois University, she started teaching in 1970. Why she chose teaching is because she loves hanging out with children. She taught 4th grade for four years at Green Bay School in North Chicago. “Then I stayed home for many years being a mom to my 2 children before coming to Devonshire,” she says in her blog. That’s when she started teaching first grade. Altogether, Mrs. Ardell has taught school for 30 years. She also got her Master’s degree in Education from National Louis University. Mrs. Ardell’s very best and favorite moment of teaching was when her father came to Devonshire and visited her class on the 100th day of school. The reason he did that is because he was more than 100 years old!
When she retires, Mrs. Ardell will hang out with her two grandchildren, spend time with her family, and travel. She likes to read and play golf, too, so maybe she will do more of those things.
We will all miss Mrs. Ardell. But don't worry, she’ll sub!
